Intercollegiate dixieland jazz has found a great following and success
in the last six years, and Williams' own Phinney's Favorite Five is
a perfect example. Formed four years ago by seniors Fred Clifford, Bob
Kingsbury, and Spence Jones, the band started on the road to success
three years ago with the addition of a well integrated rhythm section
consisting of Juniors Tom Hayne, John Halsey, and Dave Hildreth-later
the band got a tremendous lift when ex-Stomperite Bob Ritter joined
the group to round out the present sound, basically a type of two-beat
swinging contemporary dixieland, ranging from a slow blues to a driving
up-tempo number.
Under the democratic leadership of Fred Clifford, and the very able
management of clarinet-businessman Bob Kingsbury, the group has enjoyed
wide success in these last three years. Travelling as far as 1200 miles
on a weekend, the band is kept busy every weekend while playing at such
institutions as Colgate, University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Dartmouth,
Andover, or at such female haunts as Skidmore, Wellesley, Smith, Wheaton,
and just about every college in the New England circuit.
Last
spring, Phinney's Favorite Five played at the Elbow Beach Surf Club
in Bermuda, and due to its great success there, is returning again this
spring for another all, expense-paid trip. The members all attest to
the fact that the hand has heen great fun, lucrative, and a real experience.
The band has paid off in European trips for Jones, Halsey, Hayne, and
Clifford. The band has also played numerous dates at Jimmy Ryan's and
the Hotels Biltmore and Statler in New York.
Although this year is the official end for the band due to graduation,
rumor has it that P.F.F. will be together next year-whether they will
be playing to a packed Chapin Hall jazz concert or travelling on a snow-packed
road to St. Lawrence, their dixieland sound will still be echoing among
the saplings of Billville.
